Dyspraxia in Education

Dyspraxia is increasingly recognised at all levels of education. In recent years it has become easier to obtain help and support for your child through the education system in the UK.

Children with dyspraxia may experience particular problems with handwriting, reading and spelling, and with P.E and games. They may find taking examinations is difficult for them.

Since the 1993 Education Act, there has been a Code of Practice which outlines the framework whereby a child's special educational needs are assessed and monitored. How this applies specifically to children with dyspraxia is outlined in Dyspraxia: A Guide for Teachers and Parents by Kate Ripley, Bob Daines and Jenny Barrett, available from the Dyspraxia Foundation.

The Advisory Centre for Education's Getting Extra Help is a brief guide to Special Education which you can buy from the Foundation.

The processes for providing support vary between education authorities. Dyspraxia Foundation local groups and contacts may be able to give you informal information.
