Popular sports such as football, rugby and cricket are great physical exercise for most children but for those with dyspraxia they are a nightmare. Children with dyspraxia have problems with coordination, spatial awareness and speed so team games which require ball skills are very hard for them.
The Dyspraxia Foundation would like schools to try and offer more simple and solitary sports such as badminton, trampolining and golf which are currently extremely limited. Research has shown that people who did not find sports fulfilling as a child were much more likely to do little exercise in adulthood.
According to a spokesperson from the Dyspraxia Foundation, More and more children are experiencing humiliation and failure in PE lessons due to being forced into attempting sports which they find extremely difficult through no fault of their own. We know that children who have a negative experience of PE in school are much less likely to do enough physical activity when they are adults, which has huge implications for their health in later life.
We will be putting together a survey on the new DF website for both adults and children with dyspraxia to find out their feelings on PE in school, what sports they would most like to do and how negative experiences have effected them in later life. The results of this survey will be announced in advance of this years Dyspraxia Awareness Week to the UKs media.
Please start thinking now about any activities you could do locally perhaps with schools that might grab some media attention for the Dyspraxia Foundation in your area and further this years cause.
